30 – HISTORY OF VASCO DA GAMA. GRANDPA BADU AND BADUZINHO AT VASCO DA GAMA

PART I of V

INTRODUCTION

Baduzinho’s story with Vasco begins long before he worked there in 1982, it begins when his grandfather Badu (José Pinto Lopes), a Portuguese who arrived in Brazil at the age of 9, played for Vasco, was a fan. By the way, not only did he play for Vasco, but also his 2 brothers Alberto and Tonico, in the 1920s or thirties. He was a virile defender, a personality trait, toughness coming from his first profession (butcher) and from the things of life, such as moving to another country.

Later he became a Football Referee and acted as a linesman in the first game of Maracanã in the game between Cariocas and Paulistas. He said that he was the one who encouraged Mario Vianna (with 2 ennes) to become a Referee, they knew each other from the Police, that brave one of old, presenting him to the Federation (so Neto heard from him a few times). So many stories he told about the time of Player and Referee, everything…, but everything is a lesson, in all activities there is the good and the not good. Baduzinho, who liked to play ball, formed the bulge, putting the pieces together to later use.

Working in Carolina Machado’s butcher shop in front of the Madureira bridge (she lived in the townhouse with Grandma Nair, an example of affection and patience) and brought fresh and delicious meat to her grandchildren daily, she knew, intuitively, the importance of protein in growth. While she worked, Grandma Nair was helping her daughter and grandchildren (Baduzinho, Jairo and Junira), Zé remembers well her sitting on the stool that to this day exists to untangle wads of tangled thread from her grandchildren and that the grandchildren took from the other boys in the village, because young people have little patience, they tangled the thread, cut it, throw away the tangled and tie a good knot so as not to stop. Then I rolled it up in a can and thus saved a spool of 10 thread for the little ones, which was not very expensive, but earned little.

It was Badu who influenced his grandson Jairo (who has his grandfather’s surname, Lopes in his name, Jairo Lopes Cesar Leal) to be Vascaíno, who also worked at Vascão’s Base). Baduzinho, having his father’s full name, 5th. Generation, he didn’t take Lopes from Badu or Spínola from Vó and Mãe, he only has them in his heart). Grandma Nair, a flamengo player, tried to influence her brothers, to no effect.

Becoming a widower very early, Badu went to live with one of his 3 daughters, Jaïra, Dona Jaïra (with umlaut), the mother of Julio Cesar Leal Junior. He told many stories, relived History, was born in 1904 (São Pedro dos Fins do Forno, Viseu, Portugal), especially those related to Football. Baduzinho lived in Vila do Bicho, in Natal, where he had a painted goal on the back wall, the reason for many, many right and left kicks (his father’s orientation confirmed by his grandfather).

When the Family moved to Ilha do Governador they went with her, she had a room at the top of the castle and went up and down the stairs, 56 steps, with vigor. He only rose slowly when on two occasions he escaped from the nearby hospital after partially recovered from Myocardial Infarction, without discharge… Badu had an incredible ability. He died at the age of 78.

Vasco followed its victorious Nau, overcoming storms, immigrant clubs are usually like this, ups and downs, due to the different origins. Always overcoming the low, returning to be champion.

Until after graduating, Julinho “having been left” from Flamengo, after 6 and a half years of victorious work at the Base, in the Golden Era of Fla when the Club won its only world championship and many titles in all categories, he was called to work at Vasco. Joel Santana, who had interrupted Fla’s series of titles under Julio’s command in 81 (towards Junior’s tri, fourth considering the 78 Juvenile), was invited to work in the United Arab Emirates, Al Wasl, with Gilson Nunes, leaving the vacancy open. Alfeu Pena and Alexandre, leaders of the Base and Seo Calçada who knew Julinho from the first campaign to be President, when he went to Cocotá taken by Seu Joca and Adriano, from the Kasarão Furniture Store, two huge Vascaínos, to win votes from the Portuguese colony that was large in the Cocotá Club and on the Island, whether from residents, or from those who had a beach house there,  for outings or vacations.

Julio took a champion team and good, very good, a squad with champion blood, took improvements to the structure that Fla had already developed, called some names to reinforce the C.T., a huge responsibility, but fortunately Vasco became two-time champion of Rio de Janeiro in 82, the year in which Antonio Lopes won the Adult Professional State, taking from the first rounds the Junior Geovani (Pequeno Príncipe) who in 83 was the best of the Junior World Cup,  soon after Ernani and, using on many occasions the youngsters of the Under-20 to play or train with the top team, sometimes Coletivo against, and to help the conquest.

The Arab world came and took the excellent Antonio Lopes to direct the Kuwait National Team. Baduzinho heard that Lopes met Otto Glória, who directed the Portuguese National Team and was interested in Vasco for the vacant position, they talked about Vasco, about how the Club was. Vasco did badly in the first round of the Carioca 83 with Zanata (former player) promoted from Lopes’ Assistant to Coach, Julio Leal continued as Junior Coach with a view to the Tri (a new and good generation). The Leaders mobilized to bring Professor Otto (Coach 3rd place in the 1966 Main World Championship in England). It took 5 couples to convince the Coach, who acted as Head Coach to take over the Vasco Ship.

At the turn of the turn, the position in the table was bad, the deal was close to occurring, but they chose to remove Zanata and make Julio Leal effective, Otto had good recommendations and agreed, when he arrived he would be the Head Coach, commanding all Football. Paulo Angione (the Supervisor, excellent and experienced), Lancetta (the Physical Trainer) and Julio Teal, the Coach (nomenclature of the time that appeared on the Maracanã scoreboard). They reduced the previous squad, hired some new names from those available on the market, between Shifts and hands on. The team was forming, establishing itself, it was a changed group (for the second time, because after the Title some left). Mestre Otto Glória arrived and added to his experience, he came in a suit and vest, participated in the planning, controlled everything that happened from outside the field, lynx eyes, wonderful and timely tirades, stayed on the edge of the field to observe and eventually comment, correct. What a great opportunity for the young coach! The team was improving, needed to win the second round to compete in the final triangular, as it did not win the first and in the sum of points would not arrive, it was in the last positions in the initial round.

A movement began to form within the Club in favor of Otto Glória taking over as Coach, part of the Fans and Directors thought the Coach was too young (32 years old), they went crazy when in the Classic appeared on the scoreboard: Coach Julio Leal, having Otto Glória. But they didn’t know that they are two different functions, that well co-ordinated works very well, it was working. The internal pressure won and convinced the Master to take over as Technician, he addressed Julinho saying what had happened, and if he cared, to which he got the answer no, it was an honor to be his Assistant. From the suit to the sweater. He did the functions of the Head Coach in a suit, but at the time of training he put on the Club’s sweater, helped by Julio and the Wardrobe Severino (because he was already old, a little arthrosis in his fingers and had difficulty in dressing), he went to the middle of the field and directed the technical and tactical training, the Assistant helped from outside the lines,  sometimes in called by Técnico. The team responded well, but by the 7th. Round lost to Botafogo with a goal by Helinho, practically ending the chances of reaching the title. The Professor still directed the team in some games (no one came to say that he was no longer the Coach or Head Coach). Julio Leal took over for the tour after the Championship, while the championship decision was taking place.

       After the Excursion, President Calçada called Julinho and said that they were hiring a Coach for 1984, Eduzinho, who did an excellent job with América, that he would no longer stay at the Club, but that one day he would give the full opportunity, because in that one he put him on the mat, but then he had to pull.

       The Director of the Base who had been elevated to the First Team, a great leader, Alfeu Pena, asked his Friend what he would do if he continued as commander of the team, which he would pass on to Edu, the new Coach. Julio said that the squad of more or less 36 players that year was limited technically and disciplinarily, which would be reduced by half for technical, disciplinary or commitment issues, according to the evaluation made, which would recommend the signing of 8 to 10 players of higher level for certain more important positions. That after the State of 84 he would make a new cut, and the coming of 2 or three of an even higher level, of the National Team. In a way this strategy was followed, with the new Coach bringing good Athletes with whom he worked in América and others, reaching the State Title and the Vice in the Brasileiro.

       There are evils that come for good, Baduzinho in 84 was invited to the Brazilian National Football Team (Junior, Youth and Children) which was Bi Sulamericana in 84 with Jair Pereira and Bi Mundial in 85 with Gilson Nunes. Towards the end of the year, Julio was invited to work at the Emirates Club of Ras Al Khaimah and left for his first international experience.

P.S. Uncle Carlinhos (Carlos Monteiro Magalhães), married to Tia Dedé (Dona Jaïra’s sister) played for Vasco in the 1950s, was a left back, but the starter, Coronel, did not give a chance even in training, because he recognized the qualities of the young man. He then decided to go to Ponte Preta de Campinas, São Paulo where he played all his life, later becoming a Coach, having helped Mestre Cilinho in several Clubs.

P.S. 2 – There are records that Arthur Pinto Lopes (Badu) also played in Vasco da Gama, so there would be four brothers defending the Cross of Malta.
