Américo Faria: An Outlier! Unique

Few have had as many victories as He did!

Not a few had the opportunity to have their first professional experience in football with him. Baduzinho, one of them.

He studied at Pedro II Internato, in São Cristóvão, entering among the first 100, there were only 3 classes at the time, in a contest where thousands from all over Brazil competed. He was President of the Pedro II Literary and Recreational Guild and Julinho keeps the Guild Card signed by Him, when he entered 63 (there were already 12 classes per year). There were no scholarships, it was merit!

As a young man, he did Street Racing and Fencing, he was good. He worked with Parreira in the ISS (Service Tax), they were in the same Physical Education Class at ENEFD at UFRJ.

As far as I know, in the 70s and 71st he started working in Football at the Children’s of Olaria A.C. where he was later awarded the Benemerence.

Around 71/72, the Physical Trainer of the Professional of Olaria was Prof. Arnaldo Cavalcanti (with i, he emphasized) and wanted to take the Specialization Course in Football. He asked Prof. Ênio Farias to appoint an Intern, still in the Faculty, to intern with him in the Professional and be responsible for the training on Monday and Wednesday, days when classes took place at EEFD, with Prof. Ernesto Santos. In addition, Julinho, the one indicated by Ênio and accepted by Belota (excellent professional, good joker) would go to the Concentration for the arrival of the Players and the dinner leaving at the time they retired (the Concentration was in the Club itself, under the stands of Bariri. In addition, he should be able to travel with the Team, as the Physical Trainer, for friendly matches and games of the Brazilian First Division, where Olaria under the patronage of Álvaro da Costa Melo (owner of all those buildings of tablets of Ramos, Bonsucesso, Penha and Olaria – they said that he started selling vegetables in those wheelbarrows – did well with the players of the house (Beto Police,  Ronaldo Boca, Aloísio, Altivo, Miguel, Alfinete, Batata, Pirulito) plus the big name players such as Jorge Vitório, Pedro Paulo, Mario Tito, Garrincha, Afonsinho, Roberto Pinto, Salvador, Mickey), competed on equal terms in the competition. Thus, the young apprentice lived and learned very early the art and craft of football, with Belota and Paulo Baltar, and the Coaches Paulinho de Almeida, Jair da Rosa Pinto and Roberto Pinto, who accumulated the functions and later became the Coach.

Prof. Américo, who worked alone in the Juvenile, invited Julinho to be his Physical Trainer and Assistant, which happened. Américo used the players made at home, it was a Barn organized by Seo Justino (Olaria organized a Tournament on the field with dozens of teams at the earliest ages, with the shirts of the different countries, it was beautiful to see). Américo also organized the Peneiras (Lutércio, Neném and many others), to identify talents from the neighborhood and surroundings, as well as from Caxias and other places. He was always connected at the end of the years to the dismissal lists of players from the big clubs, reinforcing his squad with experienced youngsters from big clubs (Jarbas, Marcos, Lulinha, Rubem Nicola, Rubens, Cavalcante, Aurê and Cabral).

He managed to get Olaria to compete in the Copa São Paulo in 72, of great value for the work and prestige for the Club. The Presidents at the time were excellent, Lawyer Dr. Jomery Raimundo Calomeni and Prof. and Dr. Edmundo dos Santos Cigarro, graduated in Physical Education.

In 74, Américo was elevated to the First Team, already with experience of the Club and meeting several of the players trained by him. In 1976 Olaria had a great campaign in Carioca in which Flu, A Máquina Dr. Francisco Horta and Rivelino, from the Physical Trainer and Pioneer of Fundão Maurição, became Champion, two-time champion, but the Coach of the Year was Américo Faria, for the beautiful work he did with Jairo Leal, who had replaced his Brother Julio Leal, because after the Technician Course in 74 he had his first experience as a paid Coach at Infanto do Flamengo in 76. Flamengo.

After this achievement, Américo went with Jairo to CSA do Estado Sopa de Letrinhas, Alagoas, to compete in the Brazilian Championship.

In 77 and 78, he went to direct the Juvenile of Fla (U.20), not only training the excellent team, but with his baggage being part of the new Philosophy implemented with the arrival of the FAF of Marcio Braga and Coutinho, focusing the select Group of Coaches and Professionals in the training of Professional Athletes (combination of the binomial Player and Man) and also training of Professionals from all areas,  at the exit or ascent of one, cascading the lower ones and the entry of the new one taking place in the most basic Category, work that culminated in the conquest of the Only World Championship of Fla in 81, using 8 Athletes trained at home, from different generations, and 3 from abroad, several other titles in the various Categories.

When he left Flamengo in 1977, he went to have his first experience abroad, in Kuwait, Kazma Club (where years later Baduzinho went to work and learned about Américo’s great work there).

It is good to remember that in 1973, when he worked at Olaria, a Competition for State Teacher was scheduled in 74, Américo and a group of Friends asked Julinho, who would also compete, but graduated more recently, to prepare everyone in the practical, physical part. The training sessions were after the team’s training sessions or on days off. They all passed, and some went to work together at the Gomes Freire de Andrade State School, doing exceptional work.

At that time Américo was also a Professor of the Coach Training Course at Castelo Branco College, training many former players.

He also worked as Director of Football at Palmeiras, at a time of important implementation of concepts in the Club, today a powerhouse.

In 1991, he was elevated to the General Coordination of the CBF, where he implemented a similar Philosophy to that of Flamengo, perfected, when he had great participation, hiring Trained Coaches, with Experience and Titles, becoming an unparalleled winner of Titles if added all the Titles won under his aegis, Torneiros, South American and World Championships of U.17, U.20, Olympic and Main (1994 and 2002). Count has been lost! Maybe he knows how to need it, no matter how organized.

He also restarted his coaching career at Boavista do Rio, with conquest. And hung up his Cap!

If Ênio Farias emphasized Education, Educator Coach, Américo Faria is the Teacher-Coach-Supervisor-Organization Coordinator, the most organized that Baduzinho has known.
