MY FIRST RIDE

I never thought the world was so big, because until then I only knew my house, which is in the Itajubá Power Plant, with no number.

Today, May 1, 1951, Mom took me for a walk around the basketball court here in Bicas and at night I went to the movies.

Page 15

FIRST EASTER

I think the holidays are simply delicious because Mom and Dad spend their time around me. That’s why I liked Easter and also because the bunny didn’t forget me and brought me lots of Easter eggs and gifts because that day was my first birthday.

Page 16

START CRAWLING AND TAKING THE FIRST STEPS

Today, March 11, 1952, I surprised everyone at home as a great novelty: I took the first steps.

In fact, just so i don’t forget, I remember that I had crawled on November 17th, stood on November 20th and walked with Mom’s help on March 11th.

Page 17

MY FIRST CHRISTMAS

I never thought Christmas was such a beautiful party! Everyone on that day is laughing and happy, including me.

On my Christmas tree, Santa Claus, who is an old man with very kind and friendly white beards, left me these beautiful gifts:

Velocípede, Short, carrapeta, shorts, pants, black slipper.

Page 18

MY LANGUAGE IS COMPLICATED

It is out of doubt that I have spoken constantly, but only in the language of the baby. First I said mom.

All the words were spoken between 1 year and 1 year and a half.

Water (apum), geek, granny, tetete (pacifier), auntie, Nena, Nini, Dedé.

Page 19

MY FIRST BIRTHDAY

Complete today, April 13, 1952, my first year of life. It was a very joyful and different day, because I felt very important. I got a little ball with one velinha.

I was very happy, and I think it’s a shame we don’t have a birthday every month… I received many gifts:

Ring (Grandma Nair), bracelet (great-grandmother Maria), automobile (Grandpa Badú), bear (Grandpa Leal), top and talc (Lucy), rubber ball (Dona Marieta), green cart (Nize), Gury soap (Ana Maria), 20.00 (Aunt Lourdes), soap (Dona Maria), white robe (Dona Juracy).

Page 20

MY HAIR AND SIZE IN THE FIRST YEAR

The way I’m developing, Dad says I’ll be able to stand up soon and take a walk without anyone’s help. Mom, by weighing me up and measuring myself today, she found that I now have 75 cms in length and weight 12 kilos and 600 grams.

Page 21

MY MISCHIEF AND EXPERIENCES DURING THE FIRST YEAR

I’m not that baby who kept quiet anymore, not touching anything. I’ve had so many experiences that it’s best to write down a few here:

I broke picture frame, mirror and dish.

I pulled the clothes out of the drawers.

Page 23

MY FRIENDS

Now I’m becoming a talking baby, and my parents understand everything I’m saying. So much so that today, April 10, 1953 I made the following sentence: Mom, Jailo pa babanho agreement, no?

Page 24

FAVORITE TOYS

Everyone says that a child who likes to play has good genius and enjoys good health. In this case, I have both great, because I like to play with ball, automobile, horn, and many others … firetruck.

I also have fun when I play with my little animal, which is a bear (toy) named Bob, bicycles and horse.

Page 25

I ALSO HAVE SETBACKS

A behaved baby shouldn’t give concerns to his parents, but every now and then, just for a little while, I don’t feel good or something happens to me. However, Mom who is a loving and dedicated nurse, is always vigilant.

Here are some setbacks that have happened to me:

I had a strong flu in January that really scared my relatives, pertussis, scurvy, chicken pox.

Page 26

I WANT TO DRESS ONLY

Mom says I can get dressed now without anyone’s help. I think I deserve to get compliments for that, because it was a bit difficult when I tried to get dressed.

Page 27

MY PHOTOGRAPHS

I don’t intend to run in any contest, but Mom and Dad have taken so many pictures of me, it’s best to put some here.

No pictures.

Page 28

CUT FOR PRIMER THE HAIR TURN

Today, August 9, 1951, for the first time in my life, my hair was cut. Something pointy and shiny called scissors ticked around my head, and when I looked in the mirror I hardly even recognized myself…

Mom was so charmed by a little dog, I decided to keep it in this envelope.

Page 29

WHAT I MOST APPRECIATE

I’m finding life every time more interesting. There are many things I like to do, but most of all I enjoy driving a car and a velocipede.

Page 30

MY FIRST TRIP

Here’s something I found much more fun than riding a cart: I took a trip to Rio de Janeiro, in the company of Dad, Mom and Grandparents, and the driving medium was buses. I enjoyed it immensely and i hope soon to make other trips equally beautiful.

Missed the date.

Page 31

MY SECOND BIRTHDAY

I feel today more important than last year, because I won again a beautiful ball, this one but with two colored velinhas.

Many friends came to greet me and brought countless gifts that were:

3 clothes, shoes, a jeep, a rope car, a gold cross, a beautiful rabbit table and many other things.

Page 32

I’m LEARNING TO PRAY

I’m sorry every night mom helps me pray and I’m very happy, because Daddy from Heaven is very nice to everyone in my family.

The first prayer I learned was in the Name of the Priest.

Page 33

I’m GOING TO SCHOOL

You think I go to school to learn to read and write? This is still too early for me, because I haven’t turned five yet and Mom just put me in kindergarten, where I learn cute songs, instructional toys and gymnastics.

The name of the school is Kindergarten Our Lady of Graces, and the name of the teacher, Aunt Nair. I also made new friends with schoolgirls, especially Marcos.

Well, my dear friends, here are my sincere thanks for the patience you had in reading my diary to the last page, where the autobiography of my childhood ends.

I wish you all all the best. And to my parents, very good and unforgettable, the gratitude of those who will never forget the sacrifices and benefits I have received from them.
