IN HILDA’S KITCHEN IN NATAL
October 2006
How to describe something so simple and so full of fidalguia?
Hilda’s kitchen is bright, bright, dignified and clean. I’d say even immaculate.
In Hilda’s kitchen I killed my termane hunger and some of the eternal spiritual hunger.
There, gluttony and sin are just meaningless words.
Beautiful kitchen! Linda Hilda!
When I entered, I soon realized that this was the main place of the house: white furniture, new and shimmy refrigerator, stove near the sink as the costume dictates; Round table lined with red crochet towel, made by Hilda. On the towel, protecting it, another transparent plastic.
Our lunch was simple. It was seen that Hilda put her best plates, glasses and cutlery, but without affectation.
There was pot steak with potatoes, white rice with carrot pieces, a lettuce and tomato salad, plus a mulatto bean with paio ( a kind of sausage for beans) and dried meat. All homemade, tasty, sanctified.
To drink, cashew juice, cold water and filter, and a well-known “evil” soda that however, in that kitchen, also became pure and blessed.
And Hilda, who’s Hilda?
Hilda is baiana (from Bahia) of the interior, simple, inn, serious and contained. She smiles little, without being unsympathetic. It’s your temper, your way of being.
She’s active and talks little, but she likes to listen and sometimes talk.
When Hilda talks, it’s good to hear it. Words are measured and are based on that same inteireza, their main mark.
She showed me the wedding photos. There she was at seventeen to eighteen, as it is today, 25 years later: serious, worried countenance, sad look.
However, it seemed light to me in the white dress stripped of embellishments, the orange blossom wreath and the short veil.
In fact, Hilda is light, in every way. Maybe because she’s small and thin, calm, the meek gestures and the wise speech.
I’d be very honored if I can one day be friends with Hilda.
