4th CUP – 1950 – Brazil – Uruguai Champion – Brazil Second Place (First Time)

4th CUP

1950

The great tragedy of July 16

1950: in the middle of Maracanã,

Uruguayans win the World Cup

July 16, 1950 marks the

football’s greatest tragedy

Brazilian at all times.

It was the day when, in full

euphoria of victory, we lost the

World, in Maracanã, before the eyes

200,000 people. There was a

Gigantic silence, when uruguayans,

driven mad by the 2-1 win,

kissed and hugged in the center of the

stadium that Brazil built to

glorify, at last, your football. We lived,

however, at the time of the “already won”. The selection

was weaker than many thought.

But it was packed. Debuted winning the

Mexico 4-0, and soon after, tied

Switzerland 2-2 in São Paulo, giving rise to the

the first signs of frailty. But

everything was forgotten before the magnificent victory

2-0 against Yugoslavia. And even more so,

after the 7-1 rout in Sweden. The 6 x 1

against Spain, then, they became

at a carnival party, with the fans

singing the “Bullfighting of Madrid”. The

uruguayans came from a weak campaign.

Thrashed Bolivia 8-0 in the single

knockout they played. But next

they drew with Spain, and won the

Sweden with difficulty. They made it to the final

with a point of disadvantage, i.e.

the tie gave the title to Brazil. Nobody

however, he conceded less than a rout.

Everyone was waiting for the beating, when Friaça

opened the count. Soon, however, came the goal

of Schiaffino. Next, the mortal blow, in the

Gigghia’s goal. Then the whole of Brazil cried.
