POLOKWANE CITY FOOTBALL CLUB
2015 -2016
2nd. AND FINAL REPORT
POLOKWANE CITY FOOTBALL CLUB
POLOKWANE – SOUTH AFRICA – 2015/2016
I – PURPOSE
- To provide the Management of Polokwane City Football Club the work done since November, 12th of 2015, to 23rd of May, 2016, when we released the players for holidays after the last Match.
II – OBJECTIVE
- To present in details the overall preparation, to evaluate the results and to recommend proper improvements to the next Season, 2016/2017 for better performances and results as the Club deserves.
III – DEVELOPMENT
1) As I came in during the Season, in November, after 10 matches played in the League and one in the Cup, I considered all the previous preparation as a Foundation Period, keeping the Physical Preparation as it was, mainly because the Trainer, Coach Eduardo was still with us, at that time, so I preferred to go to the Basic Period till the end of December working hard to develop my Methodology of Coaching, included the Team´s Philosophy, that is to play and do not allow the opponent to play, to score goals and avoid the adversary to do it; the Team´s Style, ball possession, game of good and forward passes whenever possible, an offensive but well balanced way to go forward; the Team´s Strategy (very offensive marking in the beginning to surprise the opponents before they get adapted, and how to defend hard and to counter attack when the adversary shows superiority, in some away games, and how to keep good results); the System of Play (a Modern, flexible and dominating one, the G – 4 – 4 – 2, with tendency to functional, instead of positional). The Marking Types (Man-to-Man, Zone and Mixed), the places (Full Ground – numbered as 1, Intermediate – tagged as 2, and Half Ground – named as 3, besides the Self Intermediate for special moments), and the Principles of Attack and Defence.
All conceptions delivered to the Squad in Theory and Practical ways.
Considering the Evolution of the Systems, practicing other Systems and ways, besides how to play against other Systems, Styles and Philosophies.
It worked well since the Squad liked the offensive approach and the ball possession.
In January, the first, we had the news that Eduardo had resigned, so Coach Mayala and me, Julio Leal, took over the physical preparation taking it to the next Period, the Advanced, up to the end of February, with more advanced approach in the Technical and Tactical aspects, as well as get into the Derivatives Systems and Tactics, Set Pieces as well, and the Derivatives ones, maintaining the Physical Plan as Eduardo organized up to the next Trainer comes.
Coach Marco Munhoz started on 25th January/February, took over the Fitness Training, did the Tests, took the weight and the percentage of fat of all the players, and considered that the Team should improve the fitness level, and reduce the percentage of fat, working hard on the field, and including the Gym at least once a week, besides recommending proper Nutrition. Coach Sly started on 3rd of February. We noticed that the technical and tactical performances improved considerably. So we completed the Advanced Phase in good condition to move forward to the next Period, of Polishment, in March, up to the middle of April. In there we re-enforced the technical and tactical aspects, since there were several changes of players in the Basic 11 due to injuries, or other aspects like the change of the System G – 4 – 4 -2 Diamond and Box in to Flat, with different request on the flanks. We experimented the 4- 4 – 2 flat with wings in training and cup, then, in the League. It worked well, but is a different conception where ball possession and control of the ball and the match are not there anymore.
Then, finally, coming to the Maintenance Period since the middle of April up to the end of the competition, with the last game on 21st May, taking care with the player’s limits due to the load of the entire Season.

Substitutes: Pule, Thapelo, Lebo, Kanda, Boban, Sipho, and Kanyenda
Replacements: Sipho x Puleng (73´), Thapelo x Thobane (38´)
Goals: Sphe (29´)
Comments: Considering it was a home game we used the strategy to start with an offensive approach and marking full ground before the opponent can settle. It was successful since we created few chances and scored an early goal with Sphe (29 min) assistance of Jabu.
In the second half the opponent put more effort to try and get an equalizer, using long balls and aerial game putting more balls in our defensive zone, but we dealt properly by introducing Thapelo, the 3rd Central Back.
Platinum was the 4th on the Log at that time.
Golden Arrows 1 x 0 Polokwane City F.C.
Date: 19/12/15 Venue: Chatsworth (Durban) Time: 15h30
Line Up: George; Mfundo, Lally, Sbu, Punch; Nene, Cole, Jabu, Thobane; Puleng, Sphe.
Substitutes: Pule, Thapelo, Lebo, Kanda, Boban, Sipho, and Kanyenda
Replacements: Kanda x Mfundo (42´), Sipho x Nene (73´), Kanyenda x Thobane (74´)
Goals: Musonda (24´)
Comments: We started the game very well putting them under pressure and missing some few goal scoring opportunities due to lack of accuracy. Along the process they gained confidence and tried to use more our right side because it was not functioning properly. Due to that situation they scored still in the 24th minute. As the situation continued we had to make an early change bringing in T. Langa for M. Pungwayo.
Coming back in the second half we came stronger trying to equalize, creating a lot of opportunities, but their GK did very well which justified him being the Man of the Match at the end.
Black Aces 1 x 0 Polokwane City F.C.

Line Up: George; Gert, Lally, Sbu, Punch; Lebo, Cole, Jabu, Thobane; Puleng, Sphe.
Substitutes: Pule, Thapelo, Kaka, Kanda, Boban, Shiba, and Kanyenda
Replacements: Kaka x Thobane (61´), Kanyenda x Sphe (62´),Shiba x Punch (82´)
Goals: Mbesuma (54´) PK
Comments: At the beginning of the game they had upper hand on us due to the way they deployed themselves on the field. After we have observed them we then organized ourselves to contain them and the game became balanced until half time. Coming back for the second half the battle was more in the middle field, then neither of the teams could create a clear scoring opportunity, until the 53th. minute when they were awarded a penalty the ball has hit Punch in the arm from a powerful short. Obviously the penalty was converted by Mbesuma at the 54th minute to make it 1 x 0 for Black Aces. We then went in to the attack searching for an equalizer but their GK made brilliant saves to deny us the goal.
Polokwane City F.C. 4 x 1 Supersport United
Date\; 16/01/16 Venue: Old Peter Mokaba Time: 15h30
Line Up: George; Gert, Lally, Sbu, Simphiwe; Lebo, Cole, Jabu, Kaka; Thobane, Kanyenda.
Substitutes: Pule, Carlington, Kanda, Boban, Sipho, Shiba, and Sphe
Replacements: Sphe x Kanyenda (59´), Carlington x Sbu 9 67´), Sipho x Thobane (89´)
Goals: Thobane (13´, 15´, 81´, 87´; Brokie (26´)
Comments: The game started with a lot of tensions and contacts in the middle field due to the fact that both teams were looking for points. Nevertheless the home team, Polokwane City looked stronger in terms of playing ability as Supersport were relying more in long balls. As the game went by we executed good combinations in the middle field as well as the flanks. In the 12th minute as we had perfect interchanging in terms of movements Lebo found himself in the right flank closed to the box and executed a nice cross combined with good run of Thobane to read the ball in the back of the net. As we continued playing well with our movements Thobane find himself in the middle field position and could combine well with Jabu, going forward and succeeded to place the ball to score the second goal of the game. Minutes later they succeeded to come back into the game from a mixed up in our defence helping them to score in the 26 minute (Brokie).
In the second half they came stronger searching for an equalizer which forced us to be more cautious having more players at the back, as the game continued Thobane succeeded to penetrate from the centre line running between 2 defenders and finding himself with only the GK to beat, which he did to make it 3 x 1. Because their style remained the same sending more players in the attack again Thobane find himself isolated on our left flank to receive a long ball from George as a counter-attack and could again only run past the defence and score the 4th goal in the 87th minute and everything was settled till the last whistle.
Bidvest Wits 5 x 0 Polokwane City F.C
Date: 22/01/16 Venue: Bidwest Stadium Time: 20h00
Line up: George; Gert, Lally, Carlington, Simphiwe; Lebo, Cole, Jabu, Kaka; Kanyenda and Thobane.
Substitutes: Pule, Thapelo, Kanda, Boban, Sipho, Shiba, and Sphe
Replacements: Sphe x Kanyenda (64´), Sipho x Kaka (65´) and Shiba x Cole (74´)
Goals: Keene (17´, 18´, 63´), Sekese (80´), Motshwari (90´ + 4)
Comments: We started the game very well, very compact, not allowing the opponent to penetrate until we failed to control the ball inside the box, allowing the opponent to score from a loose ball. Having conceded the goal we tried to go forward searching for an equalizer and find ourselves caught off guard with the counter attack followed by the cross we failed to win, that resulted to the second goal with a header between our two centre backs.
Coming into the second half we tried to adjust our performance in terms of attacking but failed to convert some few chances we created. As we became attacking minded also trying to introduce two fresh players at the same time, but while they were about to be introduced, we conceded the 3rd goal. Minutes later as we lost the shape in terms of compactness they used the spaces between us to outnumber us in defence to score the 4rd one. As the game continued we made another change, always in search of improvement but we couldn´t score a goal until we concede the 5th goal from a corner what we did not defend well.
Polokwane City F.C. 2 x 1 Jomo Cosmos
Date: 30/01/16 Venue: Old Peter Mokaba Time: 15h30
Line Up: George; Gert, Lally, Carlington, Simphiwe; Lebo, Cole, Jabu, Kaka; Thobane and Kanyenda
Substitutes: Pule, Tlou, Thapelo, Nene, Boban, Sipho and Vuzy
Replacements: Nene x Lebo (34´), Sipho x Kanyenda 976´), Thapelo x Thobane (90´)
Goals: Kanyenda (1st ´), Aka (68´PK), Sipho (83´)
Comments: We started the game well as we wished scoring early in the first minute, to unsettle our opponent. As they became rough kicking our players it made the game not to continue as planned in terms of our style which is passing game and continued until the interval.
Second half improved a bit for the 2 teams, in terms of passing as the opponent were searching for an equalizer, then became balanced. Around 65minutes we were caught in the middle of defence with a deep ball from their middle field that we could not clear between Carlington and George, inside the box, which result in a penalty after the contact with their striker. As we conceded from the penalty we doubled our effort making a tactical change bringing in a speed player (Sipho) for Kanyenda, who could use his abilities to score our second goal minutes later after running with the ball from the centre line, between the defenders. Few minutes before the end to consolidate our lead we introduced another defender Thapelo, to prevent them to score until the end.
Polokwane City F.C. 3 x 1 Maritzburg United
Date: 03/02/16 Venue: Old Peter Mokaba Time: 19h30
Line Up: George; Gert, Lally, Carlington, Simphiwe; Lebo, Cole, Jabu, Kaka; Thobane and Kanyenda
Substitutes: Pule, Tlou, Thapelo, Nene, Boban, Sipho and Vuzy
Replacements: Vuzy x Kanyenda (22´), Sipho x Vuzy (74´), Boban x Kaka (90´)
Goals: Mekoa (37´), Vuzy 9 57´), Thobane (62´, Sipho (87´)
Comments: The game started in a very high note with both teams playing good football, but failing to convert some few chances at the early stage of the game. Maritzburg got their brake through from the corner kick which we failed to defend well in the box, finding Mekoa who could only kick the ball in the net inside our box that was crowded. We managed to get an equalizer in the second half after Vuzy who came in for Kanyenda trying to cross the ball which went straight in to the goal as an equalizer. As the game continued we scored the second goal from Thobane with a good tactical awareness. Minutes later we were awarded a well deserved penalty that Jabu missed. Towards the end of the game we succeeded to get the 3rd goal, Sipho. To seal the game 3 x 1 final score
Platinum Stars 3 x 0 Polokwane City F.C.
Date: 07/02/16 Venue: Royal Bafokeng Time: 15h30
Line Up: George; Gert, Lally, Carlington, Simphiwe; Lebo, Cole, Jabu, Kaka, Boban; Thobane
Substitutes: Pule, Tlou, Thapelo, Nene, Sipho, Puleng and Vuzy
Replacements: Sipho x Boban (46´), Puleng x Kaka (66´), Tlou x Gert (79´)
Goals: Msomi (28´), Segolela (51´), Ngambi (75´)
Comments: In search of improving our away results we tried to adopt another way of deploying ourselves in the field with a new formation with 5 players in the middle field. It did not work as expected with most of the players seating back on our half, which is a defensive position even when we were in possession of the ball, This positioning invited them into our half making us commit more mistakes until we failed to defend well a dead ball situation (a free kick) inside the box allowing them to score the first goal.
Coming back in the second half we adjusted our formation which worked well going forward but we couldn’t score due to lack of accuracy and also the brilliant saves of their goalkeeper. As the game went by they managed to get the upper hand in the middle field with good movements allowing them to score the second goal. Their third goal came from a thrown in our left side followed by a long ball on our right that we failed to win and with a cross that we couldn´t defend in the first post, combined with a good run of Ngambi to head the ball into the net.
Polokwane City F.C. 1 x 2 Golden Arrows
Date: 13/02/16 Venue: Old Peter Mokaba Time: 18h00
Line Up: George; Gert, Lally, Thapelo, Simphiwe; Lebo, Cole, Kanda, Kaka; Thobane and Sphe
Substitutes: Pule, Carlington, Nene, Sipho, Cream, Puleng and Vuzy
Replacements: Sipho x Sphe (56´), Puleng x Kanda (68´), Cream x Lebo (88´)
Goals: Thobane (7´), Shitolo (43´), Ramagalela (75´)
Comments: We started on the high note with an early goal by Thobane after receiving a long pass from Kaka. Our opponent tried to push forward forcing us to make mistakes in defence until the 43rd minute, before half time, when they got an equalizer due to a bad defensive position.
They continued threatening us from the beginning of the second half looking very dangerous in all their attacks but we stood firm not allowing them put the ball into our net until the introduction of Ramagalela who managed to run pass our defence from free kick which was executed fast and to score the second goal. After the goal we also tried to attack but we missed some scoring opportunities due to the awareness of their goalkeeper, until the end of the game with 2 x 1 in favour of Golden Arrows.
Polokwane City F.C. 2 x 3 Ajax Cape Town
Date: 20/02/16 Venue: Old Peter Mokaba Time: 15h30
Line Up: George; Gert, Lally, Thapelo, Simphiwe; Nene, Cole, Jabu, Kaka; Thobane and Sphe
Substitutes: Sticks, Carlington, Lebo Sipho, Randy, Puleng and Vuzy
Replacements: Vuzy x Sphe (46´), Sipho x Lally (56´), Randy x Kaka (77´)
Goals: Isaacs (44´), Nshumalo (48´), Jabu (57 and 90´+ 2)
Comments: The game started very slowly from both sides neither of the 2 teams having the upper hand to create a clear scoring opportunity for the most part of the first half. Our opponent managed to score their first goal just before the half time with our defence not properly positioned.
They managed to score again in the early minute of the second half while we went in attack searching for an equalizer. Moments later we could score the goal with a free kick from our dead ball specialist (Jabu). Nevertheless they restored their two goals lead in the 64 minute with a good finish. We managed to push more players up front and with the introduction of fresh players (Randy and Sipho) searching for goals which did not come. The encouragement came again with another free kick at the edge of the box which was converted by Jabu his brace at the 90th minute. We tried to search for another goal, to avoid defeat but the Ajax preventing us to equalize.
Kaizer Chiefs 1 x1 Polokwane City F.C.
Date: 23/02/16 Venue: FNB Stadium Time: 19h30
Line Up: Mfundo; Gert, Thapelo, Carlington, Simphiwe; Lebo, Cole, Jabu, Kaka; Thobane and Vuzy
Substitutes: Sticks, Gert, Vieira, Nene, Randy, Sipho, Puleng
Replacements: Vuzy x Nene (76´), Puleng x Kaka (80´), Sipho x Thobane (90´+ 4)
Goals: Thobane (30´), Matoho (37´)
Comments: In this game we started with a conservative approach defending from just before centre line to allow us to be compact and using fast break attacks. It worked well and in the 29th minute we managed to get a free kick after Thobane was brought down, the said free kick resulted to a goal after a good delivery from Jabu and combined with a good run of Thobane at the near post, but we couldn’t maintain our lead when we lost the ball unnecessary in the middle field which resulted to a corner well executed and well finished with a header by Matoho who jumped higher than all our defenders.
In the second half Kaizer Chiefs tried to control the game in the middle field becoming more dangerous in every attack but our goalkeeper up to the task denying Chiefs to score the second goal. As both teams wanted to win, the game became entertaining with attacks in both ways but only the lack of accuracy and the brilliant saves of the keepers determined the result locked at 1 x 1 draw.
Polokwane City F.C. 0 x 1 Bidvest Wits
Date: 09/03/16 Venue: Old Peter Mokaba Time: 19h30
Line Up: George, Mfundo; Thapelo, Carlington, Simphiwe; Lebo, Cole, Jabu, Jomo; Thobane and Vuzy
Substitutes: Sticks, Lally, Kanye, Cream, Rendane, Edgar
Replacements: Cream x Vuzy (76´), Kanye x Jomo (77´), Puleng x Lebo (89´)
Goals: Ntangasi (57´)
Comments: As the game was of a big importance for the 2 teams Polokwane City fighting for survival and Bidvest Wits for championship made the players of the two teams having tough challenges from the beginning of the game. Also with the rain coming down from the first half making the playing conditions not ideal we were unfortunate after a long ball from our middle field past under the goalkeeper and could only go wide to mark the end the end of the first half minutes later.
In the second half Bidvest Wits adapted a more direct approach with long balls which helped them to score from inside the box after we failed to clear the ball from a corner kick from left to the right. After the goal we introduced fresh legs with using speed get an equalizer but we lucked accuracy in front of the goal posts, and we couldn´t score with the game ending what 1x 0 lost after 90 minutes
Free States Stars 1 x 1 Polokwane City F.C.
Date: 19/03/16 Venue: Gobler Park Stadium Time: 15h30
Line Up: George, Mfundo, Thapelo, Carlington, Simphiwe; Lebo, Cole, Jabu, Jomo; Thobane and Vuzy
Substitutes: Sticks, Lally, Edgar, Kanye, Cream, Sphe and Rendane
Replacements: Kanye x Jomo (60´), Rendane x Vuzy (76´),
Goals: Mohomi (55´), Vuzy (70´)
Comments: We saw Free States to play days before using the 3 – 5 -2 System and the plan worked well despite a initial advantage for them using the left inside deep on the flank creating a good opportunity in the 8th minute, but after having correct the tactical problem bringing Jabu to help Mfundo we improved and created some opportunities, with the opponent stopping some actions with foul, not properly taken by our players Thobane e Jabu,
In the second half we created a goal opportunity but the keeper denied the finishing of Jabu. As Lebo fouled in the right side of our defence, Mohomi scored in a brilliant shoot from a free kick well taken. We intensified our attacks creating a few opportunities up to Vuzy scored the equalizing goal in an assistance of Jabu. Free States became more offensive after the goal and replacement, but we stood and fought till the end in 1 x 1
Polokwane City F.C.1 x 3 Mamelodi Sundowns
Date: 13/04/16 Venue: Old Peter Mokaba Time: 19h30
Line Up: George, Mfundo; Thapelo, Carlington, Simphiwe; Lebo, Cole, Jabu, Kanye; Thobane and Puleng
Substitutes: Sticks, Gert, Lally, Edgar, Cream, Sphe and Kanyenda
Replacements: Edgar x Lebo (57´), Cream x Simphiwe (57´), Sphe x Puleng (83´)
Goals: Castro (32´and 51´), Thobane (53´), Dolly (63´)
Comments: Being the game at home and against a team fighting for championship we planned to work hard to control the game in the middle field and taking closed care of their playmakers and strikers. We were able to prevent them to score in the first 30 minutes and courageously going to the attack, but in the 32nd minute Billiat assisted a good ball to Castro (in position off side not given by the Linesman and the Referee), beating George. The goal destabilized the team, mainly because they knew it was not regular, even so we fought back, having Sundowns one more chance in the first half, denied by George. After the break we came offensively trying to equalize but was Casstro who scored again at 5 minutes to make it 2 x0. We intensified the attack searching for a goal and it came in the 52nd minute with a strong shoot into the net of Sundowns. Our offensive approach continued, with Sundowns defending and only going forward in counter attacks, but on the minute 62 Dolly scored the third goal, get into the box and shoot to score the 3rd,making it 3 x1. The team continue fighting but Edgar after coming in helping the team to improve was red carded for tacking heavily the opponent. Despite the fight 1x 3 was the final result in favour of the leaders of the League.
Polokwane City F.C.1 x 0 Chippa United
Date: 16/04/16 Venue: Old Peter Mokaba Time: 15h00
Line Up: George, Gerts; Lally, Carlington, Simphiwe; Nene, Cole, Cream, Kanye; Thobane, Kanyenda
Substitutes: Sticks, Kanda, Jomo, Randy, Vieira, Sipho, Rendane
Replacements: Rendane x (Kanye (69´), Cream x Sipho (74´), Kanda x Thobane (90´)
Goals: Thobane (89´)
Comments: As we had seen them playing before, recognizing their capacity to built from the back and having difficulty to do so when spaces were denied we planned to mark full ground since the first minute, creating difficulties for them that couldn´t impose as they like. Also using the speed to counter attack their slow defence. We had a good chance with Thobane in the first half, but not many were created by both the teams. As they were 6th in the log trying to improve their position the game gained more action in the second part, but only closed to the end came for us the winning goal, from Thobane, getting three important points in the direction of getting better position.
Orlando Pirates 0 x 0 Polokwane City F.C.
Date: 27/04/16 Venue: FNB Stadium Time: 19h30
Line Up: George, Gerts; Lally, Thapelo, Simphiwe; Edgar, Cole, Sipho, Randy; Thobane, Kanyenda
Substitutes: : Pule, Sbu, Jabu, Jomo, Kanye,Vieira,Puleng,
Replacements: Sbu x Lally (47´), Jomo x Sipho (63´), Kanye x Randy (68´)
Goals:
Comments: Knowing how Orlando Pirates use to play we planned to mark closed to the Middlefield do deny spaces that they like to use in high speed, and it worked well , being denied to them clear opportunities in the first half. In fact they came in a false 3 – 5 – 2 with Sarr going between the 2 defenders and from there one of the three playing long balls to their strikes, but our defenders did well and our wingers helped the wing backs to prevent action in the flanks. Each team had one opportunity in the first half.
They came strong in the second half but finding our defence well organized and our team working well in the offensive aspects having created the best opportunities of the game, with a free kick from Cole and a finishing from Thobane. Final result 0 x 0.
Polokwane City F.C. 0x0 Black Aces
Date: 30/04/16 Venue: Old Peter Mokaba Time: 15h00
Line Up: George, Gerts; Carlington, Thapelo, Simphiwe; Edgar, Cole, Sipho, Randy; Thobane, Kanyenda
Substitutes: Puleng Jomo,Jabu,Kanye,Vieira,Sbu, Pule
Replacements: Puleng x Kanyenda (46´), Jomo x Sipho (71´),
Goals: no
Comments: The team started well against a strong opposition, controlling the game and the ball but not creating real opportunities up to the 30th minutes when Aces had the first opportunity, followed by a goal opportunity by Thobane.
After the half time we came strong on them searching for a goal, and again Thobane´s effort in the 51st minutes went wide. Minutes later they also created an opportunity not converted. As they were fighting for top 4 finish they intensified their attacks and almost scored with Mbesuma, but we fought back and were more dangerous. Another draw in sequence.
Supersport United 2 x 2 Polokwane City F.C.
Date: 08/05/16 Venue: Lucas M. Moripe Time: 15h00
Line Up: George, Gerts; Sbu, Thapelo, Simphiwe; Edgar, Cole, Sipho, Randy; Puleng, Kanyenda
Substitutes: Rendane, Jomo, Jabu, Lebo, Kanye, Pule, Carlington, Mfundo
Replacements: Rendane x Puleng (60´), Jomo x Sipho (73´), Jabu x Randy (81´)
Goals: Worme (32´), Kanyenda (63 ´) Forman (64´), Jomo (86´)
Comments: We started the game playing well, very cautious playing marking closed to the head of the circle to contain them in most case playing long to Brokie to flick for Phala, and with struggle to contain that situation until we conceded the goal in the 30th minute. In that first half we created better chances to score and played good and offensive football. In the second half we came back very positive until we score in the 66´, we were a better team until we concede the second goal which put us under pressure a little bit since we were looking to get full result from the game. They scored the second goal 1 min after equalizing. We made positive changes with Jomo x Sipho (73´) and Jabu x Randy (81´) and changed the formation to4 -4- 2 box and the team became very effective and equalized at (86´). And we could have won it in the last minute with an open chance from Kanienda.
Polokwane City F.C. 2 x 2 Tuks
Date: 11/05/16 Venue: Old Peter Mokaba Time: 19h30
Line Up: George, Mfundo; Sbu, Thapelo, Simphiwe; Edgar, Vieira, Sipho, Randy; Thobane, Kanyenda
Substitutes: Jomo, Jabu, Rendane, Cole, Carlington, Kanye and Stiks
Replacements: Jomo, Kanyenda (68´), Jabu x Sipho (80´), Rendane x Randy (80´)
Goals: Sibande (8 ´own goal), Zwane (18´), Ntombayithethi (70´), Thobane (74´)
Comments: The opponent was fighting relegation, being at home applied the strategy used in most games to press from the beginning searching for an early goal, what we got with Sipho. Then they fought back and scored the equalizing 10 minutes later. The two teams continued the battle for a winning goal, and it was the opponent that scored first in a corner kick the striker headed alone from short range, since Lebo did not follow his player. But we did not give up and fought back to score with Thobane, his 12th goal in the League. As the game continued the teams tried one more goal, but no real chances were created. Another draw, only one point, four games without a loss.
Bloemfontein Celtic 1 x 1 Polokwane City F.C.
Date: 21/05/16 Venue: Doctor Petrus M. St Time: 15h00
Line Up: George, Mfundo; Sbu, Thapelo, Simphiwe; Lebo, Vieira, Sipho, Randy; Thobane, Kanyenda
Substitutes: Rendane, Jabu, Jomo, Shiba, Pule, Gerts, Zuma
Replacements: Rendane x Thobane (38´), Jabu x Kanyenda (77´), Jomo x Sipho (85´)
Goals: Lamola (1´), Thobane (6´)
Comments: Despite the 2 teams could not get any better position on the log after playing the game, both teams played to win and Celtic scored in the very first minute, again from a set piece. We adjusted our game and started playing and immediately scored the equalizer, with Thobane that was combining well with Kanienda and creating problems for their defence. But 30 minutes into the game Thobane felt uncomfortable in the hamstring and he was replaced by Rendane to avoid aggravating the injury.
After the half time there were real opportunities, the opponent playing with long balls from defence to the flanks, but our wings helped a lot the wing backs. In this half there were few opportunities for both the sides, despite the two teams playing to win. The replacements in the end of the half gave us some offensive actions but not effective to score. Another draw in succession, 4th and 5 games without loosing.

Replacements: Kanye x Randy (46´), Jomo x Kanienda (69´) and Rendane x Sipho (90´)
Goals: Puleng (12´ and 20´)
Comments: We decided to use the Nedbank Cup to give game time for non playing players and experiment new formations and systems whenever possible, so for this game we brought 10 different players from the last League match, keeping Carlington due to no other centre back available. At home we used the strategy not to give the opponent time and space to adjust, it worked well since we scored two goals in the early stages, with Puleng, the team playing well, but loosing shape quite easy, because this 11 had not played before. The adversary, top of Gauteng Motsepe League improved and did some good attacks, specially using the fast right winger and the striker, but our defence did well denying them a single goal. In the second half we controlled the game but some of our players started to feel the long time without playing 90 minutes, the game endurance, and we did some replacements to improve and to give to other players time to play. Final result 2 x 0 and qualified for the Top 16.
Platinum Stars x Polokwane City F.C.
Date: 02/04/16 Venue: Royal Bafokeng Time: 15h00
Line Up: George, Mfundo, Carlington, Lally, Simphiwe, Lebo, Edgar, Cream, Kanye, Puleng and Vuzy
Substitutes: Sticks, Gert, Vieira, Randy, Sipho, Sphe, Kanienda
Replacements: Sphe x Vuzy (46´), Sipho x Cream (80´) and Randy x Kanye (96´)
Goals: Vuzy (OG) 11´, Edgar (45´), Carlington (pk) 110´)
Comments: We decided to play a combined team, half the usual used in the League games and some fresh legs played the first game of the Nedbank Cup. It was a good decision, since the game last 120min. In the beginning we played a more defensive position, since we were caught in the last game against them, started well, but in the 12th minute they scored first with a head of Ngambi, As usual we improved our game fighting back and despite they have had another opportunity we scored the equalizing goal with Edgar in a wonderful header, in a cross from Cream in 45th minute. The second half was full of actions, the two teams trying to score; our team well settled denying them opportunities, till the end of the second half time: 1 x 1. The two teams felt the unusual extra time under strong heat, their defence having problems to deal with our counter attacks, having one of their defenders received the red card, becoming only 10,what we used well and at the end of the second part of the extra time having scored with Carlington converting a penalty kick. Final result 2 x 1 qualified to the Top 8
Polokwane City F.C. x Baroka
Date: 24/04/16 Venue: Old P. Mokaba Time: 15:00
Line Up: George, Gerts, Carlington, Lally, and Simphiwe. Nene, Cole, Jabu, Kanye, Puleng and Thobane
Substitutes: Sticks, Thapelo, Randy, Lebo, Sphe, Sipho, Kanienda
Replacements: Kanienda x Nene (58´), Sipho x Simphiwe (58´), Sphe x Puleng (74´)
Goals: Mutupa (42´) and Makgaka (45´)
Comments: Considering the importance of the match we decided to start with the same team that one week before beat Chippa, playing well ,only bringing in Jabu x Cream (injured in the League game. But the team did not start well, with the opponent using long balls creating problems for our defence, especially Lally having difficulties to hold their fast and good strike. Then came the first goal after a set play free kick they scored the first goal, and before we fight back still in the first half they scored the second. In the second half we improved with Sipho coming in, but the opponent knew to deal with the result in their favour, and even becoming more offensive with Kanienda and Puleng coming in we did not manage to change the result, 2 x 0 for Baroka, stopping our way to the Top 4.

8) Time of Trainings
We used to practice at 9h00 and 15h30 in the Ladanna, Players arriving at least 30 minutes before (injured supposed to be 60 minutes, but no Doctor and Physiotherapist) and Staff 1 hour before, to meeting and discuss the training or other issues. The meetings pass to have place only in the office. Once a week two days before the Match, the Staff had the Week Meeting, also passed to happen in the Office. When the League changed games to 15h00 we followed: 15h00
9) Training in the Stadium
Considering modern researches and professional experiences of the Staff, the evening practice should be at the same time of the competition, mainly in the Match´s Field, which we did if possible. Two day before the match against Platinum Stars we practiced at the Old Peter Mokaba. Two days is better.
10) Evaluations
Before my arrival there was no players’ individual evaluation in terms of weight and fat percentage, as well as fitness tests. Upon my arrival we started to measure weight and fat percentage and did one test. When Coach Marco came in the weight and percentage of fat were taken weekly, and a set of test done, to evaluate and in according to the results to plan accordingly and establish targets to be achieved
11) Statistics
Official League Games played: 20
Points: 22
Win: 5
Draw: 7
Lost: 8
Goals for: 22
Goals against: 29
Position attained: 13th. Upon arrival it was 13th.
Best position: 10th (2nd and 9th December 2015)
IV – CAMPING AND TRAVEL
It is recommended to camp one day before Official Matches, which was done. In the beginning we had some difficulties corrected in our meetings after games to plan the camping, travel and meals
PSL is a five stars competition, so everything must be accordingly.
V – APPAREIL AND EQUIPMENTS
Having the players in full quality uniform and shoes is fundamental for the discipline and confidence of the group. No complaints, despite just one set for Staff and Squad of each colour, having sometimes during the week double shift, then using in the afternoon dirty and wet clothes. And no short socks for physical trainings.
Some sizes must be adequate in according to the players´ height and size.
During the Season some of the requested equipment like wall barriers and others were brought to support the development of the trainings.
VI – DIET / NUTRICION/RECOVERING
In terms of Nutrition upon our arrival we find out that certain nutrients and supplements that help the players to improve their performance were not provided to them. After we have request them from the Management then it was solved its results were visible because the Players started looking fresh.
When Coach Marco came on request it was provided the Criotherapy (Ice therapy) after home games and in the following day after away games.
VII – TECHNICAL STAFF
Initial
- Head Coach – Julio Leal
- Team Manager – Mr. Bernard
- Assistant Coach – Mr. Mayala
- Fitness Coach – Mr. Eduardo
- Goalkeeper Coach – Mr. Marumo
- Doctor – Dr. Dlamini
- Physiotherapist – Dr. Levi
- Equipment Manager – Mr. Jazzman
Final
- Head Coach – Julio Leal
- Team Manager – Mr. Bernard
- Assistant Coach – Mr. Mayala
- Assistant Coach – Mr. Sly Mosala
- Fitness Coach – Prof. Marco Munhoz
- Goalkeeper Coach – Mr. Marumo
- Doctor – Dr. Sbuniso Dlamini
- Physiotherapist – Dr. Levi
- Equipment Manager – Mr. Aphane Lesiba
The union and commitment of the Technical Staff was huge, the quality is there, and all of them besides the experiences worked very hard.
In the away games the Trainer Marco Munhoz and the Goalkeeper Coach, Marumo did not travel with the rest of the Staff and the Squad. Besides that Coach Marco Munhoz had never his Working Permit completed, and he was not allowed to warm up the Team before a couple of games.
I coordinated the Program, the Training Plan and the Team’s Preparation for the remaining League as well as the Cup, but always discussing with the Staff.
The Philosophy and Methodology was introduced in Polokwane City since the very beginning and discussed every single topic with the Assistants, trying to respect the Club’s tradition, but at the mean time trying to build a new club´s methodology
In the beginning we used to meet formally once a week, and informally every day before training, to plan the trainings, the Week Program and the sessions, distributes the jobs, with every point being discussed and all members participating. After we were told the meetings have to be in the Office, what we pass to do.
The Staff showed very big commitment.
Under the Technical point of view I may say all members are well qualified for their jobs, with experience in the Club and Country.
VIII – MEDICAL DEPARTAMENT
The Medical Department plays an important role in the Club, preventing first, and curing whenever necessary. Prevention is better than cure.
But it did not work well this season at Polokwane City F.C. due to no one is available during the trainings, taking long to recover injured players.
It was one of our Achilles Tendon this Season, despite the quality and commitment of the two Professionals, the Doctor (Dlamini) and the Physio (Levi) as they only come in the day of the game (sometimes the night before). And the Doctor does not work in away games;
IX – FIELDS, STADIUM AND TRAINING CENTER – CLUB´S OFFICES
TRAINING FIELDS –
We used permanently Noerdelek – at Ladanna, although the field is not in a good condition and no shower after trainings.
We also used the Peter Mokaba Rugby Field for few days during inter-season training, and we find it in a very bad condition.
STADIUNS – Old Peter Mokaba Stadium – New Peter Mokaba Stadium for games
We also used the Old and the New Peter Mokaba Stadium fields two day before most of home games. The field of the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium was good and the New very good!
CLUB´S FACILITIES – In terms of Office organization in the Club Village we have one of best Offices that helped us to work in a very good condition in terms of meetings and other considerations.
X – SUGESTIONS
- To improve the training facilities
- To form a Medical Department on a daily basis;
- Continue the program of supplementary diet to get maxim response of players;
- Get in touch with one University to implement a Scientific Project. Science is important in Sports, nowadays;
- To record all Polokwane City’s games and some important sessions. Prepare DVD of all players, as well as the C.V.
- Create a Video Library and a Library in the Club specialized in Sport, Football and Culture;
- Form a Professional Scouting Team to scout trough out the region, all the Country and abroad;
- All Technical Staff full time professionals;
- Daily Press Release of the main activities of the Club;
XI – CONCLUSION
Above all I wish to thank Polokwane City F.C.’s Chairman, Mr. Johnny Mogaladi and the Club´s Committee for the given opportunity to work for Polokwane City F.C.
Regards,
God bless You,
